Picture of two Kindles--one bigger than the otherInterested in submitting a Kindle Single but not sure how? Well, before you do, there are a few guidelines you’ll want to know about.

1. It needs to be an original work–one that you have created yourself.

2. As we’ve stated in other articles on this site, the length of your work should be between 5,000 and 30,000 words.

3. You must be okay with selling your piece anywhere from $0.99 to $4.99. Amazon allows you to participate in the 70% royalty option, even if your book is priced below $2.99. It does not allow this option with other digital books uploaded through Kindle Direct Publishing.

4. It must be a work that stands on its own–not chapter excerpts from a longer work like a book.

5. It may not be published in its entirety on any public websites on the Web.

6. As of this writing, Amazon is not accepting the following:

  • How-to manuals
  • Public domain works
  • Reference books
  • Travel guides
  • Children’s books

If you are looking for more in-depth information about the submission process for your Kindle Single, we suggest you check out Amazon’s website for their Submission Policy.

What is a Kindle Single?

Posted April 10th, 2011 in About Kindle Singles by Faith

On October 12, 2010, Amazon announced a new format for the Kindle e-book reader–a Kindle Single. It is specifically intended for shorter digital publications that range from 5,000 to 30,000 words. In page length, that would be somewhere between 30 to 90 pages.

Possible names for these shorter works are ones like chapbooks, long pamphlets, novellas, and even extended journal articles–basically a compromise between a full-length magazine article and a short book.

Pricing for Kindle Singles

Posted April 9th, 2011 in About Kindle Singles by Faith

The price range for Kindle Singles is from $.99 to $4.99. You are allowed to select the 35% or 70% royalty option.

An important thing to consider when choosing between the two is that the 70% royalty rate is subject to delivery fees. Delivery costs are determined based on the size of the file you upload and assessed by units sold. Delivery costs could theoretically eat into your royalty rate if you sell enough units.

Amazon offers two different royalty plans for digital products. The simpler of the two is a flat 35% of the product’s selling price, regardless of the file size of the product. The second plan offers a 70% royalty payment, but you are charged a “delivery cost,” which is subtracted from your sales price before the 70% royalty is calculated. How do you decide which is the best deal?

Advantages of Publishing Kindle Singles

Posted April 5th, 2011 in About Kindle Singles by Vickie

Until recently, most authors found it necessary to write full-length books or ebooks, publish articles for magazines in the form of news reports and short documents, or use a blog format to share their viewpoints and thoughts.

Now Amazon makes it possible for writers to express their essays, articles, and other short works in what is called a “Kindle Single.”

Using Amazon’s formatting to make a Kindle Single allows a writer to publish their work and receive regular royalties for their pieces, rather than receive only a flat fee as is the case with article submissions to magazines.
